Each time I see AJ Vaa, I have the extreme urge to poke him just to make sure he’s real. I know, it’s a weird thing which I usually do when I see people with cartoon muscles. Don’t get me wrong, he’s not jacked like Johnny Bravo but he is ripped like your average Spartan. Let’s put it this way, AJ Pyro or Vaa or whatever you want to call him, is a physical specimen. He’s one of guys that you probably would look at and say, “Alright, that dude’s a fighter”.
Well, if you have seen AJ Vaa before and thought that in your head then you’re damn right. In 2 weeks time, AJ Vaa will be competing in ONE FC’s Malaysian Featherweight tournament at it’s Return of Warriors event. Together with Melvin Yeoh, Raymond Tiew and Jian Kai Chee, Vaa will be vying to be the first ever ONE FC National champion.  We managed to catch up with Vaa for a few minutes in between his crazy scheduled (we’ve been told that he’s training up in the mountains), to speak about the upcoming ONE FC featherweight tournament, redemption, his muscles and eating food.

TFN: Hey AJ, Happy New Year and thanks for taking time off to speak with us. We’re 3 weeks away from ONE FC: Return of Warriors where you will be taking part in a 4 man tournament to crown the ONE FC Featherweight National Championship. What does it mean to you to be part of this inaugural tournament?
AJ: It means a lot to me.I’ve been training hard and sacrificed everything to prepare for the ONE FC Featherweight National Championship.
TFN: You’ll be facing Jian Kai Chee who’s a man known for his stand up prowess. What do you think of your opponent’s ability and what’s the most dangerous thing about him?
AJ: He is a very dangerous striker and his striking techniques are very good.I respect him because he will fight anyone. He is a real fighter and it’s a pleasure to fight him.
TFN: We all know that Jian Kai Chee is a Muay Thai specialist while you’re trained extensively in Silat. Do you think your Silat will be more effective than his Muay Thai and why?
AJ: I trained in Silat since I was 10.Since then I learned a lot of martial arts including Muay Thai which also I fight professionally in.All martial arts are special and has it own strength and uniqueness. As a MMA fighter, I have to evolve and train everything, but Silat always strengthen my warrior spirit.
TFN: In your last appearance at ONE FC in Malaysia, you faced Evovle’s Mitch Chilson and you loss via submission. Do you see your upcoming participation in the Featherweight tournament as a an opportunity for redemption?
AJ: Yes,this will be my redemption and will show my true talent and ability. My previous training preparation/fight were not solid and lacked high level training partners and a proper coach. This time I’m really ready. Big thanks to ONE FC CEO Mr.Victor Cui and match maker Mr. Matt Hume for believing in me and giving me this fight.
TFN: In the other leg of the tournament, Melvin Yeoh will be facing Raymond Tiew. Should you beat Jian Kai Chee, who would you rather face in the finals and why?
AJ: Raymond and Melvin both are good fighters and it will be a good fight.I don’t mind fighting either of them.
