Sarawak Muaythai Charity Challenge a great success!

KUCHING: A total of 100 exponents participated at a Muay Thai combat sports exhibition event which ended yesterday at the Youth and Sports Complex’s multi-purpose hall here.

The event, which was called the Sarawak Muay Thai Charity Challenge, was aimed to promote the combat sport throughout the state. It involves a number of exhibition matches during the two-day event which started June 30.

“We have participation from local Muay Thai clubs, institutions of higher learning, school students and local youths from around here. We also have Muay Thai clubs from Labuan and Sabah participating at this event namely the Labuan Tomoi Club, Borneo Combat Gym and Borneo Red Empire Club,” informed event representative Hartika Abu Kasim.

Hartika added that the organisers also intended to promote Muay Thai not only as a self-defence and combat sport, but as another method for work out and exercise as well.

“Muay Thai is a very physical combat sport that involves great a deal of strength in its manoeuvre and movements,” added Hartika.

Mas Gading Member of Parliament Datuk Dr Tiki Lafe was present to officiate at the event’s opening ceremony. He too donated RM5,000 to the Sarawak Muay Thai Charity fund as a sign of support.“We are very grateful that Datuk Tiki has decided to give us a donation to our association. The association will put the money to good use,” informed Hartika.

On the second day of the event, Petra Jaya Member of Parliament Datuk Fadillah Yusof was present during the closing ceremony. Like Tiki, he too pledged RM10,000 to the Sarawak Muay Thai Charity fund as a sign of support.

Hartika revealed that during the event, the state Muay Thai exponents have fared well against exponents from the other states. They have shown great deal of determination despite being relatively new in the scene.“The event was a success and we appreciate the support from all the Muay Thai Clubs from all around the country,” added Hartika.
