Interview with Busiido MMA! Brunei's premier MMA training ground!

Bussido MMA is currently the biggest martial art & fitness training ground in Brunei. They are the new home for MMA, Muay Thai, BJJ & Karate for the Borneo martial art enthusiasts!

FightBah hooked up with 1 of Bussido's owner Mr. Eazy to ask him about Bussido MMA & the facility this gym offers!

(Eazy Anuar on the right)

1. Hi Eazy, nice to meet you. Tell us a bit about yourself.

Likewise buddy, my name is Ahmed faez Anuar, people address me as Eazy Anuar. I'm a born and bred Bruneian, im 26 years old. I stand at 5'8" and walk around at 82kgs.

Growing up, I was very active in rugby, where I managed to make it into d national team and eventually captained the team for 6 years. Nowadays I dedicate my training, time and energy to MMA training. Its a transition I took so that I can focus on my own strengths and capabilities as an individual instead of a team where not everyone's goal and drive is on the same boat as you.

One of my team mates is a national boxer, so every off season, I would train with him on d mits just to keep up on fitness, and thats where martial arts started for me. Down the line, around 2008/2009 an expat teacher from Australia with a BJJ background started rolling out d mats at a local sports complex looking for training/rolling partners. I gave it a go,fell in love and as they say, 'everything else is history!'.. as the years progressed, I got more serious in my grappling, picked up muaythai, improved my boxing training (with the help of an X olympic boxer from Kenya, whose a househusband in Brunei now, luckyy!!) and trained more judo and wrestling. everything just works in perfect harmony and im in my training comfort zone right now.

2. Tell us about Busiido MMA, how did you come up with the name & what does it mean?

Busiido started off as 'Busiido martial arts and fitness academy' opening its door about 6 years ago, by a very active X national karateka by name of Mr.Alwee See. Initially the plan was to set up a small private dojo catering to karate, taekwondo, muaythai and silat. started off really small, its just your average single unit dojo with rubber floors, mirrors and wooden partitions.

I approached him one day and brought in a BJJ class and explained to him the whole MMA movement. Our business and partnership started from that day on. We were content with d BUSIIDO name which means warrior. as there is a warrior in every single one of us.

3. How did this MMA gym come about?

Early 2011, plans were made on expanding into a bigger facility. With the blessing of god the almighty, a few investors decided and agreed to cough up some capital to build a new facility. Plans looked good and location was superb. The project started not long after that. Not only expanding the facility, we also wanted to add in more classes into our timetable.

4. Could you tell us about the types of training program available in the gym?

As for now, we have a variety of programs. for Muaythai alone we have: beginners, advanced, sparring sessions and Muaythai cardio.

On the grappling side we have, BJJ basic and advance, no gi grappling, grappling for beginners and open mats.

We have dedicated boxing lessons. We also have cross training programs. Karate and Judo for kids.

We boast equipments like 7ft heavy bags, tear drop punching bags, wall pads, 2m x 1m 5cm thick Tatamis, a small boxing/muaythai ring, kettlebells, sleds, hammers and tyres and d list goes on. we are still looking for whatever program any one can offer, for example yoga or any other forms of martial arts. we basically want to fully utilize the whole facility, all day everyday.

5. Tell us about the trainers involved & any affiliates to the gym.

We have a dedicated and success driven staff of trainers: our local muay thai trainers have certification from Rangsit Muay Thai institute and Sitsongpeenong muaythai.

Our local boxing coach is and accomplished national boxer with a long experience in Sukma and international bouts. and our Kenyan coach, who is available for private sessions upon request. who in his time has represented kenya in d 96 atlanta olympics, Kings cup gold medalist and commonwealth games medalist and an active contender in d european boxing scene.

We have a 6th dan & a female 4 dan sensei who overlooks d karate program.with a vast experience in d sport, having competed in world tournaments and multiple sea games meets.

The BJJ,grappling and MMA programs are spearheaded by myself.

6. Are there any competition that the gym will be joining under it's own banner?

Yes, in the future we are looking forward to compete in numerous events under the banner. As we have already done for the first time in d KK headhunters challenge. We are going to be active in joining all sorts of tournaments weather it be, grappling, striking or karate. any chance we can grab that can help make our gym known, we will leap into it.

7. Any good promotion from the gym thus far? Anything you would like the readers to know about?

At the moment, the management is still working on proper, suitable prices that will cater to all types of preferences (monthly fees, 8 class programs, 3,6 month fees or yearly fees, earlybird prices and so on)

As for now we still charge a walk in price for each lesson untill we finalize our prices.

8. Tell us what are your plans for Busiido MMA & what you hope the gym would accomplished?

Our plan and goal is to be one of the best if not THE best MMA facility in Borneo and SE Asia, offering good MMA programs. On top of that, we want to be able to produce young upcoming contenders in the Asian fight scene, and hopefully to establish a strong fight team.with that ball rolling, that will attract more international clients/fighters to come and train with us.

9. Any competitors so far (in respect to the MMA scene) in Brunei & how your gym is better?

Besides the active BJJ competitors, we are still grooming and polishing our Muaythai competitors and MMA contenders and they will be making debuts respectively in 2012.

10. Any words for the readers of FightBah and martial art enthusiast in Borneo?

To respected FightBah readers, whenever u guys are in Brunei or happen to stop by for abit and looking for a place to train, spar or to just sweat out, our doors are always open and we welcome any one and everyone. we're all warriors with something we fight for, sharing experiences and giving a helping hand is what we want to maintain and practise. lets keep this sport that we love active and solidify the presence here in Borneo and in Asia. Osss!!
