Wes Jaya Muay Thai seminar at K.K.

Wesley Wayne Jaya (AKA Wes Jaya) is a Muay Thai CMTA Lightweight Canadian 2007 - 2008 Champion ; a CMTA Junior Welterweight North American 2007 Champion; and no stranger in the Malaysian Muay Thai fight scene.

Wes Jaya was down at the Furious Style Kick Boxing gym on the 9th & 10th July doing a Muay Thai seminar. The seminar is organised by Furious Style Kick Boxing & Borneo Combat Gym. Wes was actually at Labuan on the 8th & 7th before coming down to K.K. & we were already hearing how awesome this Muay Thai champion was at their gym.

The seminar was a 2 days technique session which was broken down to Day 1: "How to step in & use the elbow", "Variant Muay Thai Round House kicks with step in", "How to counter Round House kicks", "Practice the Teep" & "What to do if your kicks got caught". While the above might sounds so basic, Wes showed moves that were more to his fighting style which caught our interest.

Day 2 was clinching practice, knee attacks & counters, trips and also light sparring with everyone in class.

What I really like about this seminar is that it isn't another 1 of those "Basic Muay Thai jab/cross... but taught by a celebrity" session. These moves were a very applicable to actual sparring & combat. In fact, Wes Jaya's experience in so many Muay Thai fights around the world confirm the importance of knowing these moves.

However the seminar is by no means difficult for beginners, Wes broke every step down so that we can understand the body mechanics in the moves. The other thing that made class interesting was Wes's humor & also his personality, he doesn't come screaming techniques to you as a coach but as a friend, making the training session casual and lots of fun.

We also got a chance to do a light spar with the champion & it was from these spar that we get to see how far our standards are compared to the way champions fight (and that's considering he wasn't even full on). The videos below are some of the light sparring Wes had with us:

You could see the calm fighting style & the mountain of experience he has against us. Wes also showed the many use of clinch fighting & trips which was something we lack practice on. But watching Wes fight, has definitely made us all learn something. Video below showing Wes and Alvin at the Thai Pads:

I had an awesome time at the Wes Jaya seminar & was happy that we all got a certificate of attendance! This seminar was great and I hope Furious Style Kick Boxing gym together with Borneo Combat Gym would host more good seminar like these!

In the mean time, we learn that Wes Jaya will be having a fight on the 22nd of this month in a Muay Thai: Malaysia vs New Zealand match! We hope & give Wes all our support! Fight hard Wes!
